Chelsea to Make £18m Bid for Bundesliga Centre Back to Help Resolve Defensive Frailties
Chelsea will make a January bid for Borussia Dortmund centre back Neven Subotic as Carlo Ancelotti looks to resolve his defensive frailties. The Stamford Bridge boss has admitted that the west London club has little strength in depth at the back and recent displays have seen the club fall away from title contention after conceding an unprecedented 14 goals in their last eight Premier League fixtures.
Serbian international Subotic has been dubbed the ‘Next Nemanja Vidic’ after some sterling performances at the heart of the Bundesliga side’s defence and this season he has excelled himself helping take Jürgen Klopp’s side ten points clear at the top of the table having let in just ten goals all season.
The lanky 22 year centre back is considered one of the hottest prospects in European football and as such Chelsea will have to fork out a large fee to convince Dortmund to sell and Roman Abramovich is ready to hand Ancelotti a significant transfer warchest this month to help the Premier League champions get back in among the title chasers.
Subotic is valued at around £18-20m but a bidding war for the former Mainz defender may well ensue as the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Real Madrid are all keeping tabs on the talented young star in the making.
Ancelotti to call up young Dutchman Jeffrey Bruma for his Premier League debut in yesterday’s 3-3 draw with Aston Villa, such is the lack of alternatives available to the Italian following the sale of Ricardo Carvalho to Real Madrid and the loss of Alex who is recovering after knee surgery.
